The process of restoring furniture sometimes feels very personal. You begin with a piece that at one point was shiny and new, without blemish. However, over time, life starts to wear away, resulting in dirt, damage, imperfections or even brokenness. When starting the process of restoration, it's always nice to have a plan hopefully leading to an end result. However, just like in life, the unforeseen can arise. That color scheme you thought was perfect, or a technique you new was right, just doesn't work. Then begins the process (all over!) of strategizing, planning and improvising to salvage the project. This can be exhausting or just plain frustrating. You begin again, work tirelessly and then, all of a sudden, something incredible happens. Your finished product is not only beautiful but better than you originally intended. All of the previous damage, the struggle and what looked like it was going to be a mistake, results in a ending product that is better than you originally imagined. So, what's the point? Enjoy the process (in painting & life)! Restoration is not easy but it can be so rewarding. Just because what you originally intended doesn't work, don't give up. After all, aren't we all a work in progress?
